Why Goat Milk?

Two bars of goat milk soap stacked on top of each other.

When selling our handmade soaps and lotions at markets, the most asked question that I get asked is: “Why goat milk?”  I also hear a lot of oooh, that’s gross and I bet that soap stinks. The latter comments make me roll my eyes after ten years of hearing those antics, but the first question is a great one.

How it all began…

When I was gifted a bar of goat milk soap many years ago, I was appreciative of the gift and tried it.  I was in total surprise when my psoriasis spots almost completely disappeared.  That is what piqued my interest and made me start looking for what made this soap so special.  I started researching and found that the answer to that question is pretty scientific but, in short, goat milk is really good for you.

So, why goat milk?

Goat milk contains alpha hydroxy acids.  Alpha hydroxy acids became all the rage in cosmetics and skin care products in the early 2000s.  Everywhere I looked, I saw print and video commercials touting that their brand-new products contained alpha hydroxy acids. Back then, I had no idea what that was, or what it did for my skin.  I have now done my research and alpha hydroxy acids exfoliate skin.  The AHA in goat milk is a naturally occurring one, called lactic acid.  Lactic acid is a gentle AHA.  This acid helps to exfoliate your dead skin cells which prevent clogged pores.  This can help prevent acne and leave your skin with a clean, youthful appearance.

In addition to that AHA, goat milk is chock full of vitamins that your skin needs.  Vitamin B6 and Thiamine are found in goat milk.  These vitamins both help promote healthy skin growth.  Vitamin A is also found in goat milk.  This vitamin helps repair tissue including skin tissue.  Niacin is also found in goat milk.  This vitamin helps repair skin from sun damage.

Minerals are also found in goat milk.  Potassium, magnesium, and selenium are all found in goat milk.  Selenium has been found useful in preventing skin cancer.

And the best part…

Above all of the goodness listed above, the fat content is the best part of goat milk for our skin.  The fat content in goat milk helps to clean our skin while retaining its moisture.  That alone is very different from other commercially made soaps which strip our skin of moisture with harsh chemicals.

The acids, vitamins, minerals, and fat content all combine to be good for the skin.

No matter what oils are added to make each bar of goat milk soap unique and different, goat milk’s components are a natural gift to our bodies.
